Made famous by resident whales and dolphins, Kaikoura's best kept secret is it's incredible diversity of pelagic (ocean going) birds. Kaikoura is the albatross capital of the world with up to 14 different species visiting the area throughout the year.
The most amazing and unique feature of Kaikoura is the huge range of albatross and pelagic sea birds that can be sighted with just a 15 minute boat journey from the coast, making many normally inaccessible and elusive species easy reachable.
Get up close and personal to the largest wingspan in the world! The Albatross Encounter tour is an unbelievable experience which takes you to feed the majestic albatross.
Travel time to these pelagic birds is just 5-15 minutes from the coastline and with a ten passenger maximum the tour is an intimate experience allowing very close proximity to these incredible birds. We are extremely privileged in Kaikoura to have a huge diversity of species visit our coastline, from the Northern and Southern Albatross to a variety of Penguin, Shearwaters and Petrels. Kaikoura has one of the largest numbers of different types of seabirds within a small area than anywhere along the New Zealand coastline and this breathtaking tour will leave you speechless.

Other Information
- Minimum age is 5 years (this can be reduced to 3-4 years at captains discretion if the conditions are suitable)
- No specialised equipment is necessary however we do recommend passengers bring warm clothing and sensible foot wear
- No experience and no prior bird knowledge is necessary. This tour is suitable for people with a general interest in wildlife to the passionate birder
- We have a 100% success rate of locating albatross on this tour
- The tour is only two and a half hours in duration and we usually travel to various locations along the coast. We start to see the pelagic birds just five minutes from the shore and you are never more than 20 minutes from the shore
- Encounter Kaikoura boasts an on-site cafe with great coffee, beautiful food and breathtaking views. Cafe Encounter is open for breakfast, lunch and casual dining throughout the day. The cafe is fully licenced, so why not pop in and sample some local beers and wines, our homemade baking and other tasty treats before or after your tour
- All tours are subject to suitable weather conditions. The sea conditions can change very quickly along the Kaikoura coast at little notice
