This Maori owned valley is steeped in culture and is known as the fiercest of the geothermal areas, the Hells Gate valley features hot-water lakes, New Zealand’s largest mud volcano and also the largest hot water waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere. Here you can get hands on with the earth and the Maori culture as you stroll through this untamed wonderland.
At the Hells Gate Spa get down and dirty in the only geothermal mud baths in New Zealand with beautification minerals which help to clear the skin, all before you relax in the mineral spas. If you’re looking for something truly one of kind try a Wai Ora Massage based on the traditional Maori style of massage known as Miri miri, which not only relaxes the body, but through karakia (Maori prayer) relaxes the mind as well.

Take a walk around New Zealand’s most active geothermal park – Hells Gate! See a living breathing land, bubble with life and bursting with feeling and heat! Also try our interactive Maori carving area as a complimentary activity. Free interactive guided tours are also conducted at 9.30am and 1.30pm.
What is the difference between Hells Gate & Wai Ora Spa facilities?
Hells Gate has semi private mud baths with a very open spa area overlooking the thermal park. Wai Ora has private mud baths with an open spa that is secluded and set apart from the rest of the complex

Hells Gate Mud Facial - allow 45 minutes
A relaxing 45 minute facial. The process revitalises the skin through its gentle exfoliating and detoxifying action, leaving your skin glowing with a healthy vitality.
Mud Body Scrub & Mask - allow 2hrs
The mud body scrub is liberally smoothed over the client's body which will purify and refresh the skin, then the mud body mask is applied to provide a gentle exfoliation, refreshing the skin and leaving it looking full of vitality.
Wai Ora Tradtional Massage - 30 or 60 minutes
30 minute massage includes full back, neck and head massage. One hour Wai Ora Traditional Massage includes back, front (legs & arms), neck and head massage.
Opening Hours
- Hells Gate and Wai Ora Spa is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 8.30am - 8.30pm
- There is a free shuttle departing from Rotorua township at 9am, 1pm & 5pm and returns at 12.30pm, 4.30pm and 7.30pm (this must be booked in advance)
