Step foot inside a traditional Maori village, deep within an ancient Tawa Forest. Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, amazing re-enactment, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting as we relive significant events within our Pre-European history!
A time in New Zealand’s history when tribes are being formed, land is claimed, alliances forged and age-old scores are being settled with battle. In this context we approach the ancient forest village of the Ngati Tama people. Meet Uitara IV – a young man, ambitious and hungry for war.
Share in the Powhiri - our ancient ceremony of welcome before you are invited into the Pre-European village, nestled within the ancient Tawa forest. With bonfires blazing, here you will witness time honoured crafts and past-times of the Ngati Tama people. See the traditional hunting techniques, fishing, weaving, carving, tattooing, weaponry displays and arts of Maori warrior training. At the heart of the Village, enter our Meeting House. Hear the whaikorero (speeches) and celebration as our famed warrior Uitara prepares to leave the village with his newfound leader. Witness a powerful and entertaining Cultural performance - the formidable haka (war dance), waiataaringa (action songs), graceful poi and much more.
The evening culminates in a traditional farewell feast. Enter our wharekai (fully equipped dining room) and dine on ‘hangi’, foods cooked beneath the ground. The meal is buffet style and is followed by a very satisfying dessert buffet.
At the end of the evening, enjoy the poroporoaki (closing ceremony). There will be speeches and songs of farewell.
An amazing 3.5 hour evening re-enactment, based on historical events, with real characters, authentic arts, crafts and powerful song & dance.
